BUTON ASPHALT AS A SOLUTION TO OVERCOME ACCIDENTS DUE TO DAMAGED ROADS

Mobility has become an important part of people’s daily lives today. Every day, people travel for various purposes, such as going to school, going to work, shopping, or just meeting friends. Unfortunately, there are risks that always lurk in this activity. For land transportation, traffic accidents are a serious threat. According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (2024), in 2021, road accidents contributed to 42,953 deaths in Indonesia. Ranked 13th out of 139 causes of death. This also means that every 6 minutes one person dies from a road accident. The three main causes of death in Indonesia in 2021 are:

1. Stroke as many as 404,559 cases

2. Ischemic heart disease as many as 276,494 cases

3. Covid-19 as many as 241,015 cases

There are many things that can cause accidents on the road, ranging from driver negligence such as driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe vehicle conditions, to damaged roads. In this article, we will focus on discussing the effect of road conditions on accidents.

Potholes can cause drivers to have to avoid suddenly and risk losing control, which ultimately causes accidents. Likewise, cracked or uneven roads can make drivers lose balance, especially when it rains and visibility is impaired. Based on Soehodho, S. (2014) regarding Road Accidents in Indonesia, road and environmental factors contribute to around 3% of deaths due to vehicle accidents.

This is where Buton Asphalt Stones can play an important role in reducing the risk of accidents in terms of road conditions. The use of Buton Asphalt Rocks in hotmix asphalt mixtures can reduce road deformation up to three times smaller (in a 1,500-track test), compared to only using Pen 60/70 Asphalt without the use of Buton B 5/20 Asphalt Rocks. With lower deformation, the road is not easily cracked, water does not easily enter, and potholes can be prevented. As a result, the road remains smooth and safe to pass, drivers can drive more calmly.
